クロマツは最大40mまでの高さに達することができますが、自然の範囲外でこのサイズに達することはめったにありません。 針は2本の束になっていて、基部に白い鞘があり、雌の円錐形は鱗で覆われており、鱗の先端に小さな点があり、成熟するまでに2年かかります。 樹皮は若い木や小さな枝では灰色で、黒い色に変わり、大きな枝や幹ではメッキされます。 古い幹ではかなり太くなります。雄花は赤みがかった黄色で、枝の先端近くに集まっており、春先に現れます。 雌花は赤紫色で卵形で、春先に枝先付近に現れます。
